Hello!!!
Last week I have watched some unique and incredible films during my time volunteering at the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) 2022. It was so cool to see so many kinds of film works that exist beyond our scope of knowledge.
So today I will be discussing a little bit more about some of the films that I loved watching at the BIFF week and one from Netflix. Also, I am putting my wish list here of films that I would love to see in the future.
Movies that I love
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On by Dean Fleischer-Camp (2021)
OMG!!! I just watched this film last Sunday on the last day of the film festival and it was so worth it. It is such a beautiful and funny animated mockumentary, but it feels so real at the same time. I can’t explain it but the amount of work they must have done to make it look so authentic was to the top level. Even though this is animated, I find this film to be very enjoyable and touching at the same time. Even so many adults also came to view it and were laughing throughout the film. Recommend it for families and adults, it is a must watch beautiful film.
Can’t wait to hopefully watch it again in cinemas or on demand.
EVICTED! A MODERN ROMANCE by Rowan Devereux (2022)
When I initially saw the synopsis of this film in the BIFF program, I wasn’t too keen and picked other films to watch in the cinemas. But on my last voluntary shift for BIFF week, this film was screening 30 mins before my shift starts, and the volunteer management lady told me that no will be coming in for the next two hours of my shift and it will be kinda boring standing outside of the theatre. So taking her advice I took the opportunity to watch it before the next lot of BIFF viewers came for the next film viewing. To be honest, I was kinda impressed with this film, you can definitely see that by the visuals it is definitely a medium to low budget film, but the storyline and narrative is surprisingly really good and I was so hooked onto it from the start. And when I was doing my research after watching it, I have come to find out that it is an independent and crowdfunded Australian film which is so amazing to hear. This film is quirky, funny and has a lot drama in it. It does take in the Australian real estate life of buying and selling houses, and makes fun of it in a comedic tone. Really enjoyed it!
Although I do not recommend this for younger audiences and those who are sensitive about certain topics like LGBTQ+ romance and sex.
Enola Holmes 2 by Harry Bradbeer (2022)
I watched the first film and enjoyed it, but this film I felt was a little better. I don’t why but something about the visuals, the narrative and the mystery genre themes and innovations is what made me really enjoy this film. I don’t think I am going to be critical for this film. Cause can we pause to state how hot does Sherlock Holmes aka Henry Cavill look in the film!!! I have got to say, they did pick some nice looking casts in this film.
Overall really liked the unique take this film has on the perspective of Enola’s conversations with the viewers as if we were active participants of this film and it’s underlying message of women’s rights in a victorian era. This film is great for all audiences alike especially younger ones, and is really entertaining if you are unsure what to watch on Netflix.
Movies am keen to watch
Brahmastra by Ayan Mukerji (2022)
I know this one is controversial on its debate of vfx over storyline, especially with its Alia Bhatt’s infamous “SHIVA…!” dialogue that has been going viral on social media. This debate has made me not too keen on watching it in cinemas, but since it has recently came out globally on Disney+, why not give it a shot. Especially with so much online marketing and promotions going on, it convinced, sorry guys I tried to resist but I went to the dark side.
Honestly, I really want to see this film since it has brought forth a movement in the Indian film industry with crazy loads of vfx, and I want to see for myself if it is worth the hype or matching the negative reviews received. And yes I get the idea that the vfx will definitely not match Marvel film’s production standards, but lets see how it goes and hopefully it is worth the 2hrs of my time.
Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund (2022)
OMG!!! The tickets for this film was selling out so fast during BIFF week, that made me so want to watch it but the showtimes were late at around 8pm and I so didn’t want to watch it late alone. But I got to say that seeing this trailer so many times, made me so want to watch this film. 🙁 Never mind will have to wait till December then … Ok let’s get back to the film talk, it is quoted by many to be a ‘dark satirical black comedy film’. With the sinking ship taking inspiration from the Titanic film, it is a kind of narrative that makes fun of those with greater wealth, class and privilege of those portrayed in the film.
I heard really great and interesting things about it. Can’t wait to watch it in theatres soon.
The Menu by Mark Mylod (2022)
Ooh just by watching the film trailer, I am getting such unsettling vibes from it but the concept is so so intriguing. I didn’t know until today that the genres are a mix of Horror and Comedy. Umm.. not a big fan of Horror. But I still want to see it. That is weird right. I don’t know why I want to watch it, ok maybe I do… I think it has got to do with the fact that this film is featuring my fave main actress from the Queen’s Gambit series Anya Taylor-Joy and the great actor Ralph Fiennes from Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel film (which I also love that film as well and highly recommend). I hope this film is entertaining and not too creepy to watch at least.
Don’t Worry Darling by Olivia Wilde (2022)
I heard several great things about this film especially from my younger sister when she went to watch this film in the cinema with her friend. The trailer is shown to be set in a utopian society in the 1950s era, where there are some kinds of disturbing secrets that she finds throughout the film narrative. I really like the concept of this film and am intrigued to watch it in the near future whether it is in cinemas or at home hopefully.
Monica, O My Darling by Vasan Bala (2022)
This film trailer looks so cool, I so want to watch it not because of the amazing cast choice with Raj, Huma and Radhika, but because of its visuals, storyline and the nostalgic vibe. Amazing, right? I am so keen to see it on Netflix soon in a few days. I really like the modern setting with the vintage neo-noir crime thriller vibes I am getting here. Especially the editing and cinematography in the trailer with the square aspect ratio to give that nostalgic vibe, which may make more sense when I watch the film. I am going to say this again but I really do like the trailer and hopefully this film sets that expectation.
So these are the films that I enjoyed and that I am keen to watch sooner or later.
Thanks so much for reading and happy watching!
